According to legend, the term “rock ’n’ roll” was coined by Alan Freed, a New York DJ. But Freed did much more than simply name a phenomenon and introduce it to millions of people. He also became the center of a scandal, ruined his life with alcoholism, and died young. He himself was the embodiment of rock ’n’ roll.

ON STAGE AT THE BULGARIAN ARMY THEATRE SINCE 1992!

“The phrase ‘sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll’ has been tattooed onto my life over the past twenty-five years. For a long time, I even believed that ‘sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll’ was life itself. Anyone who wasn’t moving at 150 km/h to deafening music simply wasn’t alive. If you didn’t embrace rock, you were dead.

And yet, it turned out to be quite the opposite. Sex and AIDS killed many people—many of my friends. The phrase ‘sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll’ no longer carries the same celebratory atmosphere it did fifteen years ago. Sometimes it even evokes a dance of death.

I have spent most of my life caught between idealism and hedonism, between selfishness and self-sacrifice, between love and sex, between chaos and order.”
