“A PAIR OF KAVALS”
When two Bulgarian shepherds become lifelong friends, they make a pair of kavals – a pair of kavals – perfectly tuned to each other. Each of them takes his kaval with him as he herds his sheep through the vast Bulgarian mountains. When one of the two feels lonely, he plays a melody on his instrument. The sound magically travels through the valleys and reaches the ears of his friend, who responds with his own melody. When the summer is over and the shepherds return to their village, the pair of kavals reunite and bring joy to the entire village, filling the air with the sounds of a friendship larger than life.
The kaval – an extremely wind flute – is central to the musical cultures and folklore of the peoples of Anatolia and the Balkans. Its sound is an indispensable part of all cultural events – joyful and light in the celebrations of life, and a voice of the deepest sorrow in moments of sadness.
Teodosii Spasov and Batuhan Aydin are taking the tradition of the pair kaval to a new level. As leading performers and soloists of the kaval in their respective countries – Bulgaria and Turkey – they are united not only by a sincere friendship, but also by becoming an expression of the connection between the two countries and their musical cultures. Teodosii Spasov has introduced the kaval to the world through numerous internationally recognized albums and in 2015 was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace. Batuhan Aydin is among the most prominent Turkish kaval players, with his own unique style that combines elements of jazz, fusion and the traditional music of Anatolia and the Balkans.
In “Pair Kaval”, Teodosii Spasov and Batuhan Aydin tell the story of the kaval – an instrument that, as a close confidant and intimate friend, bears witness to the centuries-old cultural heritage of Anatolia and the Balkans, both for its performers and for all who have found solace in its deeply emotional sound.
“The Kaval Couple” brings the kaval’s stories of love, death, friendship and betrayal to the contemporary concert stage. The two kaval soloists are accompanied by a chamber or symphony orchestra; original compositions and traditional motifs meet an orchestral language situated between classical music, modernity and jazz to create a unique experience for audiences around the world and tell the story of the instrument.
“The Kaval Couple” is more than a concert: it is the emotion of centuries, gathered and transformed into music.
