THE BULGARIAN DRESS – Concert Performance
On the stage of the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, one of the most exciting cultural projects dedicated to Bulgarian identity will come to life — “THE BULGARIAN DRESS,” a large-scale concert performance based on an idea by internationally renowned designer Ivan Donev.
At the heart of the performance is the largest Bulgarian dress — an impressive artistic installation made from thousands of hand-crocheted squares, created by the hands of more than 400 women from every corner of Bulgaria. Hundreds of volunteers from different generations have woven their work, stories, and love for their homeland into one shared symbol of unity under the motto “All of Bulgaria in One Dress.”
The presentation transforms this extraordinary creation into a powerful stage experience, where music, visual art, dance, and light tell a story of memory, traditions, and the strength of the Bulgarian spirit. The audience will journey from the cosmos to Mother Earth, through deserts and glaciers, and finally to Bulgaria. They will experience the story of a future bride, her love, and the legacy of a mother’s love and prayer. The symbolism of the performance naturally connects with the celebration of Bulgaria’s Unification Day and conveys a message of community, continuity, and national dignity. At the finale, the names of all the women who created the crocheted squares will be projected onto the dress with light.
The performance features the Orchestra of Opera Plovdiv, conducted by Dian Chobanov; the Academic Folk Choir, conducted by composer Kostadin Buradzhiev; VAYA Quartet; composer Nedy John Cross; and director Stanimira Manolova.
The scenographic and visual environment is created by Petko Tanchev, who uses contemporary multimedia solutions and 3D mapping to transform the stage of the Ancient Theatre into a space where the past meets the present.
“THE BULGARIAN DRESS” brings together folklore, classical music, contemporary performing arts, and impressive visual technologies in a performance that does not simply tell a story about Bulgaria — it brings Bulgaria together on one stage.
