Tribe

The play tells the story of Billy, the only deaf member of the family. Raised within the brilliantly constructed system created by his parents, Billy remains invisible. Everyone around him seems to have forgotten his inability to hear, but they also fail to recognize the fact that he has feelings. Throughout his life, he has supposedly been the person everyone must accommodate, yet in the end the exact opposite turns out to be true. Most painful of all is that his own parents, and his father in particular, refuse to accept the fact that this man is deaf and simply needs to be part of something - part of them. Now is the time to ask ourselves: who is it that truly cannot hear? To ask "What?" after every word and receive no answer, to struggle constantly to fit in but without success, means that no one hears you at all. Billy turns into a ghost, without whom the tribe cannot exist. The major turning point comes when Billy meets a girl - one who is going deaf. She shows him that he matters. The ecosystem is destroyed, there is a pest in the beautiful garden, where among all the blooming flowers stands a single enormous weed.TRIBE tells a story about love and its absence, about disability and its manifestations, about family, about a person's burning desire to love and to be loved, about the striving to hear, to understand, and to be understood. It is a story about the deeply rooted need to belong to a particular place, community, or home, about the need to create meaning for ourselves and for those close to us. TRIBE is a play that surpasses its time. Brilliantly interweaving genres, it offers a strong and clear narrative, draws attention to fundamental themes, and is free from speculative human relationships, cheap literary tricks, and vulgarity.
